Transition Story

Welcome to Rose Haven Farm, a small sheep farm that has now transitioned to new adventures. Many of you will remember that Rose Haven Farm operated in Langley, British Columbia, then moved to Ontario in 1994 to Grey County and then to Prince Edward County in 2001. Over the years the farm was an active sheep farm with various breeds ~ Romney, Rideau Arcott, Border Cheviots and later Texels and their crosses, as well as Angora Goats. A value-added approach was common with lamb cuts sold at farmers markets and later through the Farm’s own shop.

Fleece, rovings and batts as well as sheepskins were part of the operation, along with events such as our Shearing Day and Fibrefest. Then when the farm came to the County, a Bed & Breakfast operation was added as well as a rental cottage. The time has now come to focus on the parts of the business that can be done well as one gets a little older and so I have now sold the sheep farm, having found homes for a great many of the animals including Tahi the llama and Flying Ears and Goatie, the two Angoras.

LambThe new Rose Haven Farm is continuing first with a new and much larger shop in the heart of Picton. The product line is still very much as in the old farm shop: lamb meat cuts, fibre, sheepskins, handmade gifts and yarns. The new location gives us light, heat, increased space, washrooms, full payment options, and a basement for workshops , clearance & fibres. Fibre products will continue including fleeces, rovings & batts and can be bought at the shop or by mail or a few shows.

The bed and breakfast has now closed. I wish to thank all the wonderful guests I had in the five years the B & B ran. Many of you sent me wonderful photos, small gifts and cards – you made me feel much appreciated that I was able to give many of you a genuine farm experience. I have lots of photos of guests and my fluffy friends. Again, thank you!

For those of you who may be looking for Accommodations in the County, I still have Rose Haven Nature Cottage at South Bay. Normally the Cottage is rented by the week in the summer, but for most dates outside of July and August, I shall be very pleased to offer 1 & 2 day stays and since the cottage is winterized, this can be at most any time of the year. I have just moved to a very convenient house in downtown Picton and may offer in a year or so a room for those of you who are dog lovers. Rose Haven Farm B & B was one of the few County places to accept guests and their dogs. The Cottage still does offer this option.

I have , indeed, made up my mind that there will be a new Rose Haven Farm with a land base, although I will proceed slowly. I have long had some horticultural interests and had to put these aside for the woolies. But in 2007, I did buy 10 acres on Closson Road, en route to several well known wineries in the county: The Grange & Closson Chase.  The site is very plain but came with a large barn sorely in need of repair.  Late last year, I had a hole in the roof fixed much to my neighbours' pleasure.  I have also been working with Ducks Unlimited to put in a pond system for wildlife.  So to date the theme has been preservation and conservation.  I will keep you informed as this project evolves.  Meanwhile I invite you to wander through this website and when you are in Prince Edward County, check out the Farm Store in Picton or consider staying at the Nature Cottage.

An update is that on March 3rd, 2009, Rose Haven Farm Store relocated to 187 Main Street, Picton, to new larger premises to serve customers better.  We still emphasize our farm origin and have local regional farm-related products as well as all our other product range.
