Workshops for 2010! Note: Please check our offerings and note we have new dates for the Maureen Harding workshops. Also we will be offering a new rug hooking class this fall. In addition to Workshops, we also offer a Wednesday Evening Knitting Club and a Thursday Evening Refresher Sessions. * * * Rose Haven Farm Store is centrally located in Downtown Picton. Our workshop area has room for up to 12 persons, heat in winter & air conditioning in summer. The workshop area contains sinks for wet felting, water, microwave & heat elements for non-toxic dyeing and a washing machine for felted knits. The Store carries many yarns, fibres for felting & spinning, felting needles, knitting needles, crochet hooks and lots of books. We also can offer classes outside in summer or at alternate venues. We offer 10% off materials for those taking classes. ![]() Erica at our Wet Felt Workshop Erika Mohssen-Beyk ran her own knitting shop in Germany, has many fine sweaters in the shop and also does custom knitting. Maureen Harding operates Dreamspin Fibres and is an acclaimed gossamer felt maker with exceptionally beautiful items in the Farm Store. Diane Torney is skilled in crochet at all levels, knitting and advanced felted knits and is known for her love of complex Nicky Epstein projects. Peter Trudeau has been deep into exploring all aspects of needlefelting and more and has creating marvelous 3-D figures. His specialty is animals and birds. Cindy Cole, an artist, is the delightful non-traditional teacher of spinning and freeform crochet~ scrumbling and operates her art business under the name, Studioloo. Loretta Moore is a specialist in Primitive Rug Hooking and designs and makes her own kits; she loves both the use of wool fabrics and yarns. Linda is the shop owner and has long produced fibres for felters and will be also teaching in various areas of felting, talks on hand-dyed & Habu yarns. Knitting & Fibre Arts Classes Rose Haven Farm Store is offering the following fibre arts classes over the Spring & Summer. As requested we will continue Beginners Knitting Classes. We are also offering Beginners and Advanced Crochet as well as Amigurumi – the art of seriously cute crochet. Other classes include: Knit & Felt Dog Sweaters, Continental Knitting Techniques, Introduction to Needle Felting, The Basics of Wet Felt and our new Wednesday Evening Knitting Club, where you can learn a few new things and enjoy some camaraderie for free! For those interested in the Habu line of Japanese yarns we can offer a session on working with unusual yarns like silk wrapped stainless steel, pineapple or linen paper. If you are from out of town and need accommodation, Rose Haven can offer you the Rose Haven Nature Cottage or provide you with a number of B &Bs and other accommodation options.Beginners Knitting ~ Lynn MacCallum Session 3: Thursdays, May & June, please call for details Cost: $20 for 2 classes Sessions can be set up anytime we have 3 - 4 persons with interest. Further sessions will be available in the later spring. Elements covered: various ways to cast on, increase, decrease, cast off, knit stitch, purl stitch, tension / gauge. The project we propose is a small knit shoulder bag, great for a summer or winter bag depending on the choice of yarns. You may bring your own yarn or purchase at the shop (10% off yarns for classes). You will need a medium to light coloured worsted or Aran weight yarn. We often use a heavy cotton but a plain wool or wool blend will also work. Knitting needles: sizes 5.0 mm. No experience needed. Suitable for adults and / or children. Drop-in / Refresher Evenings ~ Erika Mohssen-Beyk Many of you have projects that need finishing, perhaps even have lounged for years. This is your chance to bring them in and get Erika’s assistance in helping you finish what you have begun! Bring sweaters, socks, afghans, lace pieces, etc. This time slot is also suitable for those who know how to knit but need a little refresher help – being reminded of those different cast-ons, decreases, short rows, and other technical items you once knew but are now hazy about. Let Erika help you get your confidence back. The shop will also be open these evenings. Beginners Crochet ~ Diane TorneySession next :TBA Cost: $20 for 2 lessons Elements include: what is crochet, the types of hooks used and how to hold, types of yarn used, basic crochet stitches: chain stitch, single, double & triple crochet, corners, working in the round, basic crochet increase & decrease, basic pattern reading, ideas on simple projects and how to use crochet as an embellishment. Samples will be available. The class project will be a spa cloth. No experience required. You may bring your own yarns (Aran or larger required) or purchase yarns at the shop before the classes (10% off yarns for classes). Our preferred yarns are Hempathy, Hemp for Knitting or cotton. Crochet hook sizes used: 4 – 5 mm. No experience needed. Amigurumi – Seriously Cute Crochet -~ Diane Torney Knit & Felt Dog Sweaters ~ Lynn MacCallum In this class you will learn how to make knit and felted garments for your dog. This includes determining suitable sizes, how to measure, appropriate fibres, various styles and an introduction to felted knits. Basic knitting needed. Complex Felted Knitting ~ Diane Torney Many of you have admired the fancy knit bags in our shop, often inspired by designer Nicky Epstein. If you have always wanted to do something wild and over the top, this is your chance. We will help you select a felted knit project and then guide you through the process not only of knitting and felting it but the assembly and embellishment to become something quite spectacular. Requirements: knitting, some experience in basic felted knits, and patience. Advanced Crochet ~ Diane Torney Basics of Continental Knitting ~ Erika Mohssen-Beyk In this class you will learn why European knitters can knit so quickly. The emphasis will be on learning the basic way to knit & purl Continental style as well as critical related cast-ons and increases and decreases. Part of the secret of this technique is really practicing with those fingers! Erika is very patient. No knitting experience required. Explorations in Habu Yarns ~Linda Swaine The Japanese company Habu carries some very unusual yarns and fibres. These are especially of interest to fibre artists and to those intrigued by the uncommon. This class will explore the character of a number of the Habu yarns. Typical yarns include silk wrapped stainless steel, fique from the pineapple family, linen paper, fishermen’s’ net, and carry along yarns like paper moiré. No experience needed, just curiosity! Basic Wet Felting ~ Linda Swaine Wet felting is essential the process of permanently bonding fibres together through water & pressure. We will explore how various animal fibres and wools felt and the types of felt that they make. This class is intended to get you over the fear of getting started in felt making and to illustrate the character of felts made from different fibre blends. No experience required. Introduction to Needle Felting ~ Linda Swaine 3-D Needle Felting ~ Peter Trudeau Needle felting can be done flat or in 3-D which makes it sculpture in fibre. This class will explore the intricacies of making truly strong and realistic 3-D needle felting projects, primarily in wool. Project will be either a bird or small animal but you can get inspired by Peter's very realistic African menagerie, soon to have some on view in the shop. Peter's work is much like a Bateman in fibre! No experience needed. Needle Felted Animal Faces ~ Peter Trudeau - Taking Names Many of you will have seen Peter's extraordinary needle felted animals with their realistic or naif art faces. This class will focus on how to make various animals heads and to create expressive faces. We will have prepared elements of the heads before hand so you will soon be deep into putting that lion or monkey head together and then really learning how to patiently add colour and accents so that the faces come alive. Prerequisite: basic needlefelting skills. This follows on our very successful 3-D class. Art Yarn Spinning ~ Techniques & Themes ~ Cindy Cole, Studioloo Cindy is an amazing art yarn spinner and will share her wild and wonderful techniques with those who want to do non-traditional, seriously unusual yarns. This will be planned as a 2 day offering with Day 1 for those who want to learn the basic techniques and then Day 2 for those who wish to go on to more complex and different types of yarn creations. This is a class that you will be required to already know basic spinning and have your own wheel to bring to the class. You can take either or both classes. Day 1 is the same class that the County Spinners just did and I understand it was a WOW! Maximum of 10. Beginners Primitive Widecut Rug Hooking ~ Loretta Moore Rug Hooking Landscapes with Fantastic Yarns ~ Loretta Moore This class continues our explorations in primitive wide cut rug hooking but combines an extensive range of yarns with fabric to make more complex and subtle colour and texture variations in the hooking. The theme is landscapes and so colours will focus on landscapes: various greens, rusts and browns, blues & greys for water & skies and rocks, golds for fertile grain fields and extraordinary colours if you are into rainbows. If you wish a particular theme and are interested in this class please contact us very soon as Loretta may have to create a kit just for you. Felted Vessels~ Maureen Harding, Dreamspin Fibres Session: Saturday, August 7, 10 - 4. Cost: $110 including lunch and basic materials. Wet felt can be used to create 3 Dimensional containers & vessels. Learn the basics of wet felting, then go on to create a shaped 3-D vessel with and without a form. Containers become wonderful surfaces for embellishment. Maureen has samples in the shop and is madly working on all kinds of new examples! No experience required. Woodgrain Shibori on Felt ~ Maureen Harding, Dreamspin Fibres Resist dyed and felted lightweight scarf. Using the mokume shibori Wet felting: Fabulous Hats ~ Maureen Harding, Dreamspin Fibres Learn the basics of 3D felting while making your own unique hat. Participants will work from a template and hat form to make a basic hat shape which can be as funky or traditional as you like. Silk caps and hankies can be added to give a textured surface, add felted dreads or spikes, let your imagination run wild! (And you will come out with a funky hat!). No experience needed. Registration required for all classes. Please telephone, e-mail or drop into the shop at least 4 days ahead to register. Most classes require a minimum of 3 to proceed. Maximum 10 when held at the shop. Some classes can handle up to 12 - 15. We are also looking at other ideas such as introduction to Lace Knitting, Garment Finishing, or Paula Lishman Fur Knitting (project included), more Advanced Rug Hooking, and Fantasy Needlefelting. |
